Mohsen Abdelmoumen: How do you explain the American policy which consists in having a dialogue with Iran to reach an agreement on Iranian nuclear power, and operate a strategic change in its relations with Cuba, while on the other hand, the Obama administration persists in its policy of sanctions against Venezuela and Russia, and does not hesitate to decree that Venezuela constitutes a threat for the internal security of the United States?
Stephen Lendman: US dialogue with Cuba and Iran is very suspect in my judgment. Longstanding US policy calls for unchallenged global dominance. It wants pro-Western regimes replacing all independent governments. It wants regime change in Cuba and Iran. What’ll come from talks with both countries remains to be seen. At the same time, Russia and Venezuela face overt US hostility. America could end up at war with either or both countries. Nuclear war is possible. Lunatics in Washington make anything possible.
Do not you think that the American empire is in decline and reacts like a wounded animal, risking taking the entire planet with it?
I think America has been in long term decline for decades. It hasn’t won a war since WW II, yet keeps waging one after another in a desperate attempt to achieve and maintain global hegemony. It keeps making more enemies than friends. Its policies may kill us all.
We saw the rise of the terrorist group Islamic State (Daesh-IS), how do you explain that with satellite coverage, the United States did not see it coming? Do you think the United States and its allies are fighting really against Daesh? How do you explain that they have failed to eradicate the Islamic state when they deployed a huge armada and an impressive military hardware? Does not Daesh-IS serving the interests of the United States?
IS (Daesh) is a US creation, same as Al Qaeda and some other extremist groups. They’re recruited, armed, funded, trained and directed as US Middle East proxies – to oust governments Washington wants removed or in the case of Iraq create violence and instability America needs to justify its presence. These death squads definitely serve US interests. We’ll see lots more of this ahead spreading to other regional countries – maybe elsewhere.
Do you think Hillary Clinton who has lost an ambassador in Libya because of his negligence when she was Secretary of State can claim the presidency of the United States?
Heaven help us if either Hillary Clinton or Jeb Bush becomes president in 2017 – or any other likely aspirant. All we can look forward to is more permanent wars heading toward possible nuclear war with Russia. I haven’t seen a single day of peace in my lifetime.
What is your assessment of both Obama mandates and how do you explain that in his second term, America knows such a rise of racist murders to the African-American community – this reminds us the period of civic movements – and which raised whole cities like Fergusson? A simple walk of Barack Obama in Selma is it sufficient to rehabilitate the US president’s policy, especially when all the responsible police officers were acquitted?
Obama is more belligerent than any of his predecessors. He’s a war criminal multiple times over. He’s a serial liar and moral coward. He broke every major promise he made. Nothing he says has credibility. His job, like other US politicians, is serving wealth, power and privilege exclusively at the expense of everyone else at home and abroad. It’s waging permanent wars. It’s letting Wall Street loot the federal treasury. It’s exploiting ordinary people everywhere. I expect whoever succeeds him will be worse.
What is your reading of what is happening in Ukraine, especially with the presence of US troops?
Ukraine is a US-manufactured flashpoint dangerous enough to start WW III. US-installed Nazis together with US forces may do it.
How is the anti-war movement in the US? What kind of actions do you organize? You have a radio that is engaged in just struggle, Progressive Radio Network, what is your audience? Are you able to counter the mass media by giving quality information that is not found elsewhere?
America’s anti-war movement is dead. We never needed it more. We need nonviolent revolutionary change. Voting is a waste of time. We have one-party rule controlled by monied interests. The system is too corrupted to fix. I reach a small audience on air and through writing. Mass public anger is needed to change things.
Do you treat topics concerning Algeria, knowing that it is a country that has experienced the monstrous colonialism of France and did a revolution? Our country has inspired liberation movements around the world. We also experienced a civil war which cost us more than 200 000 deaths and conducted a relentless fight against terrorism. Do you know Algeria?
I haven’t written about Algeria or many other countries deserving attention.
What are your plans of struggle and what message would you like to convey to our readers?
I’m 80 years old. The spirit is very willing. The flesh isn’t what it used to be. Writing and media work comprise my activism. I put in long hours daily but tire more easily than years earlier. Age takes its toll
