Dr. Colin Ross. DR.
Mohsen Abdelmoumen: Your book « The CIA Doctors: Human Rights Violations by American Psychiatrists » is traumatic and reveals the criminal experiences of the CIA on American human subjects. How Doctors were they able to participate in these experiences?
Dr. Colin Ross: I think the doctors participated for a variety of reasons: patriotism; the Cold War mentality; money; prestige among colleagues; the thrill of being a « spy »; academic promotion via grants and papers; sadism; and curiosity. All this had to be accompanied by rationalizations and denial.
Isn’t CIA’s project MK-ULTRA a contrary experiment with your ethics, even criminal? Why was no CIA agent punished?
Technically, the doctors were not CIA agents – they were assets or contractors. Agents are full-time employees. The experiments clearly violated the Hippocratic Oath – therefore they had to be kept secret to protect the CIA and the doctors. They weren’t punished because everything was classified, and then when the MKULTRA documents were declassified in the 1970’s, they were protected by the old boys network and the corruption of organized psychiatry.
You are a world-renowned psychiatrist clinician and researcher with a remarkable career. In your opinion, your colleagues who participated in these experiments are they guilty and should they be judged?
Some of the MKULTRA contracts were quite bland and supported normal academic research. But many clearly violated the Hippocratic Oath, were professional misconduct and malpractice, and grounds for professional censure and civil malpractice lawsuits. Few if any of the contractors are still alive, so it’s now a moot point.
Former CIA director Richard Helms killed many documents related to the MK-ULTRA project. Those that have been declassified and to which you have accessed have they been useful for your research?
Yes, the 15,000 pages of documents on ARTICHOKE, BLUEBIRD, MKULTRA, MKSEARCH, MKNAOMI and other projects have been extremely useful and are the foundation of my book.
In your opinion, is it not immoral and criminal to put science at the service of the military and the CIA?
Yes and no. I don’t think many people object to using science to design better tanks, planes, guns, protective gear etc. Many scientific advances funded by the military have trickled down into civilian life to great benefit. The problem is not with the ethics of modifying people’s minds for warfare – this is done in basic Army training – the problem is the conflict with the Hippocratic Oath once doctors get involved. The doctors deliberately create a mental disorder for military purposes (dissociative identity disorder) when they create Manchurian Candidates.
Do you think that the CIA’s experiences you have denounced continue today, especially in the black sites and secret prisons of the CIA?
Public domain photographs and information about « enhanced interrogations » at Guantanamo Bay and Abu Ghraib provide conclusive evidence that mind control operations are ongoing. « Enhanced interrogations » is just a euphemism for brainwashing or mind control.
« Military Mind Control: A Story of Trauma and Recovery » is a shock book. Why are the military and the intelligence agencies interested in psychiatry?
As far as I can see, there are two basic purposes: to create spies who are resistant to interrogation if captured because their mission information is hidden behind artificially created amnesia barriers; and for counter-intelligence purposes to detect Manchurian Candidates being run by opposing intelligence agencies.
Can the United States give lessons of human rights and democracy to the entire planet while American citizens were used as guinea pigs for appalling experiences?
This is definitely an example of hypocrisy and denial.
Is not the CIA out of control and does it not constitute a State in the State?
There is no way for a civilian to determine whether the CIA is in or out of control, or exactly what it is doing, because all the relevant information is classified. Intelligence agencies are structured to be « out of control » in a sense because of compartmentalization, which is for security.
I am very interested in your work and I noticed that you were skeptical or even critical of your fellow psychiatrists, as in your book « The Great Psychiatry Scam: One Shrink’s Personal Journey« . Can you explain us the causes?
I am skeptical and critical of psychiatrists for a number of reasons: denial of past unethical experimentation; way over-endorsing the effectiveness of psychiatric medications while minimizing the side effects; being bought by the drug companies without even realizing it; endorsing the genetic brain disease model in a way that is actually disproven by the evidence in the psychiatric literature; downplaying the importance of psychological trauma in mental disorders; allowing themselves to be controlled by managed care in the US.
If your books are of vital importance to science, your documentaries are also powerful. Can you tell us about their impact? « Multiple Personality: Reality and Illusion » has inspired Hollywood. Is this documentary particular in your career?
The educational videos and documentaries I have produced are part of my effort to treat mental health professionals and the general public about mental disorders and trauma. I don’t know of any specific examples of their having « inspired » Hollywood other than my being interviewed for a series of documentaries, most of them about mind control or multiple personalities.
You have developed the Dissociative Disorders Interview Schedule (DDIS), a tool for diagnosing dissociative disorders. What can you tell us about this academic achievement?
The DDIS is included in the American Psychiatric Association’s Handbook of Psychiatric Measures as a valid and reliable structured interview. It has been translated into a number of different languages and used in dozens of published studies. The DDIS has contributed to the scientific validation and understanding of dissociative disorders.
Is your research on dissociation disorders progressing?
Yes. I have ongoing research projects, papers in press and papers under review at journals.
Your book “Portrait of Norman Wells” reminded me Jack London and his adventures in the Klondike. Is it your life in the Canadian Arctic that has placed you on this impressive itinerary devoted to scientific research and the quest for knowledge?
I think my experience in the Canadian Arctic contributed to my having a broad range of interests and being a more well-rounded human being. My areas of interest that I have published on include psychiatry, human energy fields, cancer and creative literature including poetry.
You were president of the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation. What is your assessment of your presence in this organization?
I have received a number of awards from the ISSTD and am generally regarded as a leading figure in the field. I have presented at the ISSTD annual conference every year since its formation in 1984.
You are president of the Colin Ross Institute in Dallas. Can you tell us about the missions of this institute?
The mission is to provide treatment, consultation, education and training about psychological trauma and its consequences.
