British historian Kate Hudson: « The apocalypse is coming! »

Mohsen Abdelmoumen: You wrote the very interesting book « Breaking the South Slav Dream: The Rise and Fall of Yugoslavia. » What were the real issues in the dismantling of Yugoslavia?

Kate Hudson: External intervention was primarily responsible. Yugoslavia had occupied an unusual position as a socialist country between the two cold war blocs, and the west had an interest in it remaining a ‘neutral’ country during that period, but once the Soviet Union was on the way out, the US sought to introduce a free-market economy into Yugoslavia, taking advantage of the economic crisis it had caused through the imposition of IMF policies, following earlier loans to Yugoslavia. The crisis began to spin out of control as Germany recognised secessionist republics in Slovenia and Croatia, encouraging the breakup of the unified state. Then numerous international actors began to want a piece of the pie, and conflict and war followed.

Mohsen Abdelmoumen : Vous avez écrit le livre très intéressant « Breaking the South Slav Dream: The Rise and Fall of Yugoslavia ». Quels étaient les véritables enjeux du démantèlement de la Yougoslavie ?

Kate Hudson : L’intervention extérieure en est la principale responsable. La Yougoslavie avait occupé une position inhabituelle en tant que pays socialiste entre les deux blocs de la guerre froide, et l’Occident avait intérêt à ce qu’elle reste un pays « neutre » pendant cette période, mais une fois l’Union soviétique sur le point de disparaître, les États-Unis ont cherché à introduire une économie de marché en Yougoslavie, profitant de la crise économique qu’ils avaient provoquée en imposant les politiques du FMI, suite à des prêts antérieurs à la Yougoslavie. La crise a commencé à devenir incontrôlable lorsque l’Allemagne a reconnu des républiques sécessionnistes en Slovénie et en Croatie, encourageant ainsi l’éclatement de l’État unifié. De nombreux acteurs internationaux ont alors commencé à vouloir leur part du gâteau, ce qui a entraîné des conflits et des guerres.
