Mohsen Abdelmoumen: What do you think of the situation prevailing in Syria? Do not you think there is a risk of total war?
Dr. Gilbert Doctorow: It’s obvious. I watched a video clip of Stephen Cohen, my colleague in New York, who was interviewed by Fox News. He gave very specific answers but unfortunately he did not have much time to explain his opinion. He’s a professional in Russian affairs for 50 years and he says the situation is very similar to that of 1962 in the Cuban Missile crisis where we were closest to a nuclear war since the Second World War. I totally agree. The main question is that our leaders, our politicians, our businessmen, the consultants, the intelligence services who do briefing every day, have no expertise on Russia. Dr. Gilbert Doctorow : C’est évident. J’ai regardé un enregistrement vidéo de Stephen Cohen, mon collègue à New York, qui était interviewé par Fox News. Il a donné des réponses très précises mais malheureusement, il n’a pas eu beaucoup de temps pour expliquer son avis. C’est un professionnel dans les affaires russes depuis 50 ans et il dit que la situation ressemble beaucoup à celle de 1962 lors de l’affaire des missiles à Cuba où nous avons étés les plus proches d’une guerre nucléaire depuis la 2e Guerre Mondiale. Je suis totalement d’accord. La question principale, c’est que nos leaders, nos politiciens, nos hommes d’affaires, les consultants, les services de renseignement qui font un briefing chaque jour, n’ont aucune expertise sur la Russie. Mohsen Abdelmoumen: In your must-read book “Whistleblower at the CIA: An Insider’s Account of the Politics of Intelligence”, you make a historical testimony about the internal functioning of the American intelligence community. What was the impact of your report on the world of intelligence? Since the publication of your book, do you think there have been positive changes in the intelligence services or, on the contrary, do the same practices that you denounce continue?
Dr. Melvin Goodman: Since my congressional testimony in 1991, there has been a greater recognition of the problem of politicization of intelligence. But my books in 2008 and 2017 on the CIA have not received sufficient attention in my opinion. Moreover, the so-called intelligence « reform » after 9/11 only made matters worse by expanding the militarization of intelligence. Lire la suite »

Quel a été l’impact de votre constat sur le monde du renseignement ? Depuis la parution de votre livre, pensez-vous qu’il y a eu des changements positifs au sein des services de renseignement ou, au contraire, les mêmes pratiques que vous dénoncez continuent-elles ?
Dr. Melvin Goodman : Depuis mon témoignage au Congrès en 1991, il y a eu une plus grande reconnaissance du problème de la politisation du renseignement. Mais mes livres de 2008 et 2017 sur la CIA n’ont pas reçu suffisamment d’attention à mon avis. De plus, la soi-disant «réforme» du renseignement après le 11 septembre n’a fait qu’empirer les choses en élargissant la militarisation du renseignement. Lire la suite »

Mohsen Abdelmoumen: You call yourself an « old school socialist ». Can you tell us why?
Prof. Mike Davis: Hm, ‘old school Socialist.’ I suppose I’m making three claims. First, socialism – the belief that the earth belongs to labor – is my moral being. In fact it is my religion, the values that anchor the commitments that define my life. Second, ‘old school’ implies putting in work year after year for the good cause. In academia one runs across people who call themselves Marxists and go to lots of conferences but hardly ever march on a picketline, go to a union meeting, throw a brick or simply help wash the dishes after a benefit. What’s even worse they deign to teach us the ‘real Marx’but lack the old Moor’s fundamental respect for individual working people and his readiness to become a poor outlaw on their behalf.
